The Chinese Restaurant
“Food is what brings many Asian families together and helps us express feelings that can’t be said out loud. Food is a repository of tradition and memory, allowing us to confirm our connection to the past and commemorate those who’ve gone on before us. Food is at the centre of the smallest and biggest of celebrations, from reunions and homecomings to weddings and holiday festivities.” - Jeff Yang
Almost every small town in North America has a Chinese restaurant. It was one way to survive as an immigrant, since newcomers lacked experience, career connections, or English skills. In this series, I captured images from various Chinese restaurants around my city, including my family’s restaurant, documenting a common journey of Asian immigrants who came to North America and had to start over.
